Hi, I’m Chris…
A dairy farm in Wensleydale (yes, as in the cheese) is not, you may think, an obvious place to inspire a budding Director of Photography.
But you’d be wrong. The ever changing light on the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales proved my muse. In a way TV came to me. I spent many happy hours watching the BBC shooting the original series of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. It was magical to me. Every summer the circus would come to town.
I was mesmerised and my fate was sealed.
After a BTEC in Media Studies in Harrogate, I gained my first job as an inhouse lighting camera person and editor for the insurance company Norwich Union. This wasn’t as dull as you'd imagine as I learned a lot, and then medical corporates followed (Character Building!), low budget shorts and a feature.
Then came Brookside for Channel 4. And what a training ground that was. I was so lucky.
Since then I’ve worked on many different shows, mostly involving a ‘Cosy Crime’ set in beautiful places where people try to kill one another in amusing ways. Dying in vats of jam, stabbed with knitting needles, that sort of thing. It’s all been such fun.
And long may it continue. My CV and Showreel will give you a glimpse into how I use light to tell a story and inform character.
If you think I could be a fit for your next production, then please get in touch.
I’ll be in my winny with a sweet sherry. No need to knock.
